Piano Forte - Cuban masterworks

The relationship between art and literature in the
works of composer Reynaldo Fernández Pavón
began in 1962 when he began his studies of music
with specialization in piano at Cuba’s National
School of Art. While there he had the privilege to
study composition with the North American professor
Federico Smith.
After completing his initial studies, he enrolled in the
Art History program at the University of Havana.
He was awarded the “13th of March” music award in
1975 from the University of Havana for his compositions.
His symphonic works and those for chamber orchestra
have been interpreted by prestigious ensembles,
such as, the Symphonic Orchestra of Matanzas, the
Cuban National Symphonic Orchestra, the Havana
Chamber Orchestra, The Brindis de Salas Chamber
Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the
Russian Federal Republic.
In 1982-83 he received the EGREM music label
“Best Musical Producer” award because of his
discography work with the group Irakere (Grammy
winners in 1979) and the Latin jazz quartet led by
Chucho Valdés. He has written music for documentaries
of the Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematographic
Art (ICAIC) and the Cuban Institute of
Radio and Television (ICRT).
His first book of poems, Presagios (Predictions),
received the runner-up award in the David Poetry
Competition of the National Association of Cuban
Writers and Artists (UNEAC) in 1979. In 1980 he
garnered first prize in the same competition with the
work Cruzando Mares (Crossing Oceans), published
in 1981 by Unión Press. Since then he published
other literary Works in Juventud Rebelde, Caimán
Barbudo, the journal Casa de las Américas, Revolución
y Cultura, and the Gaceta de Cuba.
In 1994 he emigrated to the United States, and in
1996 composed music for the theater piece Cuentos
Negros (Black Tales) by Lydia Cabrera, premiered in
the Repertory Spanish Theater of New York. The
work was awarded Best Musical Production in 1997
by the Critics Association of New York.
Reynaldo Fernández Pavón has written the theater
piece En el Parque (In the Park) and the unpublished
novel El Lirio de Prado (Lily of the Field).
Since the year 2000 he has offered classes as adjunct
professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese
of Temple University, Philadelphia, and is
instructor of Spanish in the Department of Languages
at Trenton Public School, New Jersey.
The CD Piano Forte- Cuban Master Works includes
a selection of his works for solo piano.
