Reynaldo Fernandez Pavon

The relationship between art and literature in the works of composer Reynaldo Fernández Pavón began in 1962 when he began his studies of music with specialization in piano at Cuba’s National School of Art. While there he had the privilege to study composition with the North American professor Federico Smith. After completing his initial studies, he enrolled in the Art History program at the University of Havana. He was awarded the “13th of March” music award in 1975 from the University of Havana for his compositions. His symphonic works and those for chamber orchestra have been interpreted by prestigious ensembles, such as, the Symphonic Orchestra of Matanzas, the Cuban National Symphonic Orchestra, the Havana Chamber Orchestra, The Brindis de Salas Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Russian Federal Republic. In 1982-83 he received the EGREM music label “Best Musical Producer” award because of his discography work with the group Irakere (Grammy winners in 1979) and the Latin jazz quartet led by Chucho Valdés. He has written music for documentaries of the Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematographic Art (ICAIC) and the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television (ICRT). His first book of poems, Presagios (Predictions), received the runner-up award in the David Poetry Competition of the National Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) in 1979. In 1980 he garnered first prize in the same competition with the work Cruzando Mares (Crossing Oceans), published in 1981 by Unión Press. Since then he published other literary Works in Juventud Rebelde, Caimán Barbudo, the journal Casa de las Américas, Revolución y Cultura, and the Gaceta de Cuba. In 1994 he emigrated to the United States, and in 1996 composed music for the theater piece Cuentos Negros (Black Tales) by Lydia Cabrera, premiered in the Repertory Spanish Theater of New York. The work was awarded Best Musical Production in 1997 by the Critics Association of New York. Reynaldo Fernández Pavón has written the theater piece En el Parque (In the Park) and the unpublished novel El Lirio de Prado (Lily of the Field). Since the year 2000 he has offered classes as adjunct professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese of Temple University, Philadelphia, and is instructor of Spanish in the Department of Languages at Trenton Public School, New Jersey.
